Prospective Upward Bound Students

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

In order to participate in the Lincoln University Upward Bound Program, an individual must be:

  • A citizen of the United States or a permanent resident (or in the process of obtaining residency)
  • An individual whose parents do not have a four-year college degree and/or
  • From a family that meets the income guidelines set by the federal government
  • In the ninth or tenth grade at one of the following target high schools:
    • Chester County
      • Coatesville Area High School
      • Kennett Consolidated High School
      • Oxford Area High School
    • Delaware County
      • Chester High School
      • Chester STEM
    • Philadelphia County
      • John Bartram High School
      • South Philadelphia High School
      • Universal Audenried Charter High School
  • Interested in attending college after graduating high school

APPLICATION PROCESS

Lincoln University Upward Bound’s recruitment process begins the fall of each academic year.  Upward Bound staff present at each target school.  Students who are interested in the program are provided with an application.  Once a student completes an application, it should be submitted to the high school counselor, who returns it to the Upward Bound office.  The Upward Bound staff review the application and set up an interview date for each student and his/her parent.  Once the interview has taken place and all of the application materials have been submitted, the Upward Bound staff sends a letter of acceptance/rejection to the student.  If interested in the program, contact either the Upward Bound office or your high school counselor.

UPWARD BOUND’S SERVICES
Upward Bound is a year round program focused on providing its students with the tools necessary to achieve academic excellence. The high expectations we hold for our students are complemented by the support system we have in place to ensure that they meet those standards. Academic Year Component  |  Summer Component

Academic Year Component
Lincoln University Upward Bound’s academic year component consists of:

  • Bi-weekly enrichment centers, where students are provided with tutoring, SAT preparation, and other activities
  • 4 Saturday sessions for all students and their parents/guardians
  • 2 additional Saturday sessions for Seniors and their parents/guardians:
    • Admissions workshop in the fall of their senior year
    • Financial Aid workshop in the winter of their senior year
  • College tours
  • Cultural activities
  • Step-by-step guidance for seniors applying to college and for financial aid

Summer Component
Lincoln University Upward Bound’s 6-week summer component consists of:

  • Being enrolled in classes (math, science, English, etc.) that will prepare students for their academic year classes
  • Taking part in various workshops/activities to enhance study skills, test taking skills, and other skills necessary for success in college
  • Living within a residence hall on Lincoln’s campus
  • Participating in various cultural and social experiences
  • Touring a variety of universities
  • Being involved in community service projects
