"ORANGE CRUSH" ROARING LION MARCHING BAND

The Lincoln University Band Program consists of the ”ORANGE CRUSH” Roaring Lion Marching Band, the Concert Band, Basketball Band, and Jazz Band.  Each of these organizations strives to provide a high level of musical experience for its members. These organizations provide music for various university functions under the umbrella of the Student Affairs & Enrollment Management (SAEM) and Department of Music.

The Lincoln University “ORANGE CRUSH” Roaring Lion Marching Band is made up both music and non-music majors consisting of 128 selected musicians and auxiliary. Membership is open to all students at Lincoln University. Members are selected through an audition process and the Fall Pre-School Band Camp, which is held before the beginning of the fall semester. Any enrolled students who become interested in performing in the band may try out during the Annual Spring Band Camp. The” ORANGE CRUSH” performs at all home football games, selected away games, parades, band competition, exhibitions and any other functions deemed necessary by the President or Band Director.

The Concert Band

The Lincoln University Concert Band is an ensemble designed to provide opportunities for all Lincoln University students to continue playing their instrument after the culmination of marching band season. It also provides an opportunity for music majors to develop their skills on a second instrument. Selected members of the Concert Band perform at on and off campus concerts and events.  The band performs basic band literature at the highest possible level. Members in the Concert Band must be enrolled in the class for one hour of academic credit. Classes meet twice per week during the semester of each academic year.

The Jazz Band

The Lincoln University Jazz Band is the ensemble for those students who possess some improvisational skills in Jazz or would like to learn the idiom. Members are selected by the Director of Bands and by audition. Music ranges from the swing era, cool jazz, smooth jazz, be-bop, and some mainstream music. Classes meet twice a week during the academic year for one hour credit.

The Pep Band

The Lincoln University Pep Band is a small group of students who play for both the women and men’s basketball games. The prerequisite ensemble for participation in the Pep Band is being a member of the marching band. The Pep band performs at every home game and selected away games. Membership is granted via the appointment of the director. The Pep Band is open to students who play traditional band instruments. 

The Percussion Ensemble

The Lincoln University Percussion Ensemble consists of percussionists from the various bands and is designed to learn and demonstrate the proper playing technique on various percussion instruments. Membership is granted through the percussion instructor and Band Director. Percussion and non-percussion majors may participate.

 

ENSEMBLE REQUIREMENTS FOR SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS 

All scholarship students must perform in two (2) band ensembles each semester.

FALL SEMESTER- Scholarship students must participate in the Marching Band for their major ensemble. Students may choose either Pep Band, Jazz Band or Concert Band as their minor ensemble.

SPRING SEMESTER- Scholarship students must participate in either Jazz Band or Concert Band as a major ensemble. Students may choose either Pep Band or Percussion Ensemble as their minor ensemble. Selection for the University Bands will be made at the discretion of the Director of Bands. 

REQUIREMENTS FOR MEMBERSHIP

The requirements for admittance into the Lincoln University Bands are as follows:

1. Must be registered as a Lincoln University student

2. Maintenance of a 2.3 Grade Point Average

3. Must apply through the Director of Bands

4. Must be accepted through try-outs or auditions
