LETTER FROM THE DEPARTMENT CHAIR
Associate Professor Charles
H. Pettaway, Jr., M.Mus.,
Interim Chair
WELCOME to the
Lincoln University Department
of Visual and Performing Arts!
“Great art
and music is that which
penetrates
the ear
and eye
with facility
and leaves the memory with difficulty.
Magical
art and music never leaves the memory.”
--Sir Thomas Beecham
The Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Lincoln University
is a place that challenges and expands the creative ideas of our students.
We have a long tradition of performing arts at Lincoln, our department was
established in August 2002; merging the Music, Visual Arts and Theater programs.
Our Arts programs are directed toward students who show promise in the disciplines
of visual, performing, and theatre arts, who are mentored by a distinguished,
dedicated, and committed faculty. Our instructors and professors are teaching
artists who strive to provide our students academic, aesthetic, and technical
challenges through a diverse curriculum.
In our Music
Program, we are committed to
training students who are directed toward professional performance, as well
as our students who will enter the noble profession of teaching the arts.
Our faculty is drawn from accomplished professional instrumentalists and
singers, whose performing experience is of great benefit of our students.
We offers students unique opportunities to hone skills through
our intensive, one on one lessons; and thought provoking, judiciously prepared
class lectures in theory and practice. Our performing ensemble
offerings include: Marching Band, Jazz Band, Concert Choir, Opera Workshop,
String Ensemble, and Theatre Workshop. The “Little Theatre” at
Ware Center has been totally renovated with newly installed lighting, sound
and recording technology; along with new seating and stage.
Our Visual Arts Program offers
a curriculum where discovery is encouraged through the development of technique,
artistic exploration, and creative problem solving. We offer
courses in design, drawing, painting, computer arts, ceramics, printmaking
and art history. We are currently developing courses in conjunction with
the world-renowned art collection at the Barnes Foundation. The newly
renovated Ware Center of the Fine Arts at the main campus offers state-of-the
art studios and computer labs for the progress of visual art techniques and
development of creative practice.
The Visual and Performing Arts Department at Lincoln
University is a small, student centered, quality program. Students
receive a solid foundation of skills and technique in the arts through entry-level
courses; and develop individual, creative, and artistic progress through
intermediate programs and ensembles. Mature talent is directed toward professional
practice through advanced studies in the creative arts.
Visual art, Music and Theater studies at Lincoln University
provides the foundation for
unforgettable experiences for students driven to make a "great noise” in
the arts.
