Resident Director

General Duties:
To supervise and direct all activities within the residential halls and provide guidance and direction to all staff involved with the residence component.

Specific Responsibilities:
1. Report and maintain close working relationship with Project Director and Assistant Director.

2. Provide direct supervision for all tutor/counselors within the residential halls and detail assignments to tutor/counselors.

3. Develop a residential life educational component designed around current events, good grooming habits, health and dress, promoting reading for enjoyment and personal counseling.

4. Assist in handing and disciplinary actions that arise inside or outside the residential halls and enforce program rule and regulations.

5. Account for general physical condition of dormitory during Summer Component and report immediately and damage to the facility.

6. Function as a liaison between teachers and students in monitoring academic performance and activities in and outside residential halls.

7. Chaperone sponsored activities on and off campus as well as assigning necessary staff to assist.

8. Maintain adequate records and files concerning any disciplinary actions, security concerns, accidents, health related problems, or any other pertinent communications regarding student participation.

9. Cooperate with the University staff to maintain positive rapport and adequate supervision of program activities.

10. Provide weekly and final evaluation of residential program. Initiate evaluation of tutorial staff and students.

11. Must be available on at twenty-four hour basis for all activities in the residential halls.

Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree minimum preferred.

2. Minimum of three years' teaching or counseling experience, preferably in a residential setting. Experience in Student Personal Services or Housing in desired.

3. Demonstrated ability to understand and provide direction and supervision to students of various background. Must possess a sensitivity to needs, attitudes and behavioral patterns of adolescents.

Evening Residence Hall Supervisor

General Duties:
Responsible for the direct supervision of the residential facility in the late evening and early morning hours.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Report to Resident Director and assist in the implementation of residential life educational components. Respond to general directives from Director and Assistant Director.
  • Maintain curfew hours and lights-out policy in the dormitory.
  • Secure residential hall in the evening and report to Resident Director any unusual behavior or disciplinary problems.
  • Enforce all project rules and regulations · Provide assistance for any emergencies that arise and notify appropriate authorities.
  • Submit written reports on all incidents occurring within the residence.
  • Provide counseling and advice with regard to social, personal and disciplinary concerns.
  • Provide evaluation of residence program.
  • Attend orientation and staff meetings.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in supervising and instructing young adults.
  • Recommendations from three persons aware of ability to communicate effectively with youth from various backgrounds.
  • Availability for late night hours of employment.

Summer Teachers (Math: Calculus, Pre Calculus, Algebra, Biology)

General Duties:
To provide academic instruction and assist in planning the academic program in addition, the summer teachers will provide tutorial assistance, professional guidance, and direction to the participants.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Report to Project Director and respond to directives from the assistant Director.
  • Teach two or more academic courses and one workshop during the summer program.
  • Develop description of courses to be taught in accordance with project objectives and clear behavioral terms.
  • Provide a mid-term and final evaluation on each participant. Also, provide frequent and immediate feedback to students regarding their academic performance.
  • Provide supervision and direction to tutors.
  • Provide tutorial assistance to students during evening study hours a minimum of twice weekly. · Chaperone a minimum of two cultural activities away from campus.
  • Attend orientation and staff meetings.
  • Assist in advising participants academically and counsel them on social, cultural and occupational matters.
  • Assist the Residential Director in providing general supervision when needed.
  • Participate in overall evaluation of the project.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in appropriate academic discipline.
  • Appropriate work experience: a minimum of two years actual teaching preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop courses and provide meaningful educational instruction to students from various backgrounds.
  • Recommendations from two individuals knowledgeable of teachers' ability to work with disadvantage students.

 

Tutor Counselors

General Duties:
To be utilized in both the summer and academic year components of the project. The description herein noted applies to both components with slight modifications where the academic year program is concerned. The tutor/counselors are to function as role models academically and socially for the participants.

Specific Duties:

  • Report to Resident Director (summer) and Professional Tutor (academic year) and respond to general directives from Project Director and Assistant Director.
  • Act as a liaison between participant and his/her classroom experiences.
  • Participate in staff orientation, training workshops and staff meetings.
  • Demonstrate and encourage appropriate study skills and habits.
  • Provide assistance to instructors in and outside of class. Participate in classroom activities to gain firsthand knowledge of what is being taught.
  • Share educational and cultural experiences with participants and assist in conducting residential life educational component. Develop presentations' academic and social growth.
  • Tutor participants experiencing academic difficulty.
  • Maintain a log of participants assisted and progress made.
  • Submit and evaluation of all assigned students.
  • Assist the Resident Director in maintaining proper decorum within the residential halls and throughout campus.
  • Assist in supervising participants in all program activities.
  • Apprise the Residential Director and Assistant Director of academic, disciplinary, social and personal problems of participants.
  • Assist in enforcing program rules and regulations in Enrichment Center.
  • Submit evaluations of project activities and residential hall structure.

Qualifications:

  • Be presently enrolled in a college or university (preferably a junior or senior). Recent college graduates and Upward Bound Alumni will also be considered.
  • Three faculty references or administrative staff references.
  • Must be in good academic standing; preferably having GPA of 3.0 average or better.
  • Effective Communication skills required.
