Upward
Bound is one of the oldest Trio Programs, it is a highly successful
college based program of rigorous academic instruction, individual tutoring and
counseling for low-income, disadvantaged high school students most of whom are
the first generation of their families to consider post-`secondary education.
During the summer, Upward Bound students live on the college campus for five-six
weeks and are involved in an intensive academic study program with an emphasis
on English, mathematics, science, reading and writing. During the academic year,
Upward Bound students receive academic instruction, tutoring and counseling after
school. Counselors follow their progress in high school and the students learn
about the college application process and how to apply for student’s financial
assistance.
Success Rate: A 1981 study found that overall more than
90 percent of Upward Bound graduates enter institutions higher learning and more
than twice as likely to enroll in four-year post-secondary institutions as students
from similar backgrounds. Four years school graduation, Upward Bound graduates
were four times as likely to have earned an undergraduate degree as students from
similar backgrounds who did not participate in Upward Bound 12th graders
from 54 randomly selected projects and a comparison group of similar students
for four years.
