Dear Colleagues:
As Dean 0f Students and Campus Life, it is important that I communicate
with other constituents regarding the mission, goals, and objectives
0f the SAEM Division. With this in mind, there are a number of basic
principles, which I believe are vital in administering successfril
student affairs programs.
1. The major goal of the Dean of Students should
be to develop a
secure community environment that promotes the development of the
“whole” person, and to provide a wide range of quality
and
comprehensive services to students. Opportunities for learning,
support systems, and a commitment to an orderly environment should
be provided for in a setting so that students may better profit
from their academic experience. It is my ambition that we develop
collaborative relationships wirh all components of our university
to better determine how we can reach these goals.
2. The university community should be a comfortable
place; a community where all feel safe and secure, an environment
that is conducive to study, a place to have fun supported by a
comprehensive system of activities and community programming, a
place where srudenrs can become actively involved in self-governance
opportunities, and a place where individual differences are
recognized, encouraged, and supported.
3. Students should be recognized as more than just
a consumer. We must understand that the growth and
development of our students is a life long learning process, not
something that is just temporary or short lived. All the services
we provide should address this fact.
4. The SAEM Division staff must be viewed by all
members of the community as a ream of proactive and
imaginative individuals who have developed relationships with students
and enjoy student contact, can deal effectively with controversy,
can get the job done regardless of the time commitment needed, can
obtain
reliable answers to questions and/or provide appropriate referrals,
and can solve problems instead of creating new ones.
