Introduction

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology offers four majors: Sociology, Anthropology, Criminal Justice and Human Services.  Each of these programs is designed to provide students with a solid understanding of social and cultural processes, institutions, and the linkages between the individual and society.

One of the primary objectives of this department is to prepare students for a variety of careers, confident in their ability to help shape a more humane world. Career opportunities include, but are not limited to, business, government, social services, and the justice system.  These programs are also designed to help prepare students for graduate studies in sociology, anthropology, human services, criminal justice, and law.

Mission

The mission of the Sociology & Anthropology Department is to prepare students to shape a better world at a time of rapid social change by:

§         Helping students recognize and appreciate the concept of multiculturalism and diversity in a global era.

§         Providing a liberal arts education with an emphasis on social science research methods, critical thinking skills, and historical consciousness.

§         Helping students develop knowledge and skills necessary for successful careers in community agencies, government, private employment, and not-for-profit organizations.

Departmental and University Policies

Minimum Grade Requirement in Major Programs:

A student must earn a grade of “C-“ or better in each course required and taught by his or her major department in fulfillment of the requirements for the student’s declared major, with a maximum of two courses completed with a grade of “C-.”  Courses taken prior to January 1, 2001 are not subject to this rule.

Multiple Majors:

Any student wanting to obtain a double or triple major in this department must meet the following requirements:

1.                  He/She must select a research topic for each additional planned major- that is, the second and third majors.

2.                  The student must have a departmental person act as a sponsor for the research paper.  This research paper must be a minimum of thirty pages in length.  If the student desires to have a triple major, then he/she must arrange to have two different departmental faculty members act as sponsors for his/her work and must submit two entirely different thirty-page research papers.  A faculty sponsor must approve any research paper used to fulfill requirements for a departmental major, and this research paper must not have been used in any previous class.

3.                  Upon completion of the work, the faculty sponsor(s) must approve the research paper(s).  Subsequently, the other members of the department must unanimously approve all research papers.

4.                  Papers must be submitted to the faculty sponsor by November 1 for those students anticipating graduating in December.  Likewise, papers must be submitted to the faculty sponsor by April 1 for those students anticipating graduating in May.
