CRITERIA FOR THE SESQUICNTENNIAL
ESSAY CONTEST

Application for the Sesquicentennial Talent Competitions

Essay Prompt:

Discuss some aspect of Lincoln University's history and/or any of the issues with which Lincoln University has been confronted since it was founded.

Rules and Procedures:

Essays will be reviewed anonymously. Essays may be submitted by any registered Lincoln University student. By submitting an essay for consideration, each entrant acknowledges that the work is his or her own work, and the work does not represent plagiarism or infringe upon the work of any third party. All review decisions are final.

A student must indicate his/her intention to participate by completing a preliminary application form in the Office of Special Events and Community Relations located in Lincoln Hall, Room 209, by January 15, 2004. The deadline for submissions in March 12th, by 12:00 noon.

Essays must be no less than 500 works and not more than 800 words, typed in 12 pt. standard font, double spaced and one and one half inch (1 1/2) margins.

Essay Evaluation:

  • Does the essay respond to the prompt 20 points
    * Has the author addressed the subject in a complete and convincing manner?

  • Is the essay creative? 20 points
    * Has the author used creative language, ideas, and style?
    * Has the author considered new ideas and fresh perspectives:
    * Has the author considered the Lincoln community as the audience of the essay?

  • Is the writing clear and correct? 40 points
    * Is the essay ready to be published?
    * Are spelling, grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation all clear and correct?
    * Does the language avoid clichés and express meaning with precision?
    * Has the essay been organized effectively with a central main point and support?

  • Is the essay persuasive? 20 points
    * Does the essay convince the audience to adopt a new perspective?
    * Does the writing engage the audience at all times?

Entries will be evaluated by a group of judges consisting of members of the Lincoln community. Winning essays will be announced in April. There will be a first, second, and third cash prize award.
