The 17th Annual Science Fair

The 17th Annual Science Fair and Poster Presentation of the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics was held on Saturday the 20th of October, 2012. Dr. Susan Safford, Professor of Biology and Chair of the Science Fair Organizing Committee coordinated the proceedings. Dr. John Chikwem, Dean of the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics welcomed the participants, visitors and the judges, while Dr. Kenoye Eke, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs brought greetings and opened the event.

Dr. Jose Russo, Director of the Breast Cancer Research Laboratory at Fox Chase Cancer Center presented a seminar titled: "The Apprentice of Science" at the Conference Hall of the Ivory V. Nelson Center for the Sciences on the 12th of April, 2012. Dr. Russo explored the qualities of scientists, drawing from examples of past great scientists including Robert Koch, Francis Collins, Johann Mendel and Louis Pasteur.

I, Shaphawn Williams, graduated in December 2011 and will be attending the May 2012 commencement ceremony. I recently was honored in my city by Mayor Ravenstahl because I am one of the first graduates of Pittsburgh's well-known scholarship called the Pittsburgh Promise Scholarship. I was honored to speak at the Mayors press conference. I was also featured in many news articles and other media outtakes in Pittsburgh.

On Thursday February 23, 2012 Lincoln University's 13th President Dr. Robert Jennings met with Dr. John Chikwem, Dean of the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and Project Director of the Research Infrastructure for Minority Institutions (RIMI). Dr. Chikwem was accompanied by Drs. Derrick Swinton and Anna Hull (sub-project principal investigators) and Dr. Michael Chorney, Professor of Microbiology, Immunology and Pediatrics at Penn State University College of Medicine and liaison of the Lincoln University-Penn State partnership.

Nathan Francis Mossell, M.D (1856-1946)

An 1879 Natural Science graduate of Lincoln University in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Nathan Francis Mossell was the first African-American graduate of the University of Pennsylvania College of Medicine in 1882. Mossell was the salutatorian of the class of 1879 and was awarded the Bradley Medal in Natural Science at Lincoln University. Furthermore, he was also awarded second honors in his medical school class.

Science Building named after President Nelson

The Board of Trustees has named the new ultra-modern high-tech science building in honor of Dr. Ivory V. Nelson, the 12th President of Lincoln University. The building is now called the Ivory V. Nelson Center for the Sciences. A grand ceremony to mark the naming ceremony was held on Saturday, the 30th of April at 10:00 am. The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries including members of Lincoln's Board of Trustees, alumni, faculty, students and Mr. Richard Farley, representative of KlingStubbins Architects.

President Nelson Surprise Farewell Party

The faculty of Lincoln University hosted a farewell party for President Ivory V. Nelson on the 14th of December 2011. The venue of the party was the Ivory V. Nelson Center for the Sciences and was attended by faculty and staff of the division of Academic Affairs. The party provided the appropriate opportunity for faculty to reflect on the innumerable and outstanding achievements of President Nelson in his twelve and half years of service at Lincoln University.
