Call to
order at 4:07 p.m. by the Dean, Dr. J.O. Chikem Moment of silence
for late Professor Y. Lin.
A one minute
silence was observed in memory of Professor Lin. Later, Dr.
Robert Langley thanked all faculty and students for their support
and for attending the funeral ceremony.
Minutes
of the October 14 meeting was approved without amendments. Faculty
reviewed two requests from the Department of Mathematics and
Computer Science a. Minimum of two C- grades in courses taken
in the major. Faculty approved that the minimum of 2 C- grades
should apply to courses taken in Computer Science and not Mathematics
courses. Faculty further recommended that the language of the
requirement should be changed from "courses taken in the department"
to "courses taken in the major." b. Faculty also approved the
request that Computer Science majors can take 2 additional mathematics
courses above calculus II to fulfill requirements for #3 and
#4 science courses.
Environmental
Science Program
· Dr. Bhat
indicated that Chemistry department will discuss and finalize
its submission at the next departmental meeting.
· Dr. Huq
suggested adding Physics to the Biology track.
· Dr. Royer
informed faculty that Biology tracks have room for a lot of
electives for majors. Public health and genetics are possibilities
for the Biology track.
Internationalizing
the Curriculum
· Three
components are involved: Physics, Biology and Chemistry.
· A three
credit course is proposed with one credit per department.
· Issues
to be discussed were presented to faculty and it was understood
that faculty will develop text materials to be used.
· Questions
regarding the proposed course as part of the core curriculum
or as an elective to satisfy science requirements in all departments
and still to be resolved.
· There
were also suggestions to offer the course as a seminar. Basic
writing skills and education courses would be prerequisites
for taking the course.
Core
Curriculum
· Dr. Royer
informed faculty that the Core Curriculum Committee was concerned
about mathematics courses above college Algebra. The terminal
or highest level of mathematics required in each major will
be discussed. · The other issue is that of a second non-laboratory
science course. Some of the courses will have to be developed.
The School
Journal
· Dean
Chikwem introduced Drs. Royer and Bhat as the co-editors of
the journal. Instructions to authors were also discussed. Authors
were asked to send their articles to the editors for review.
Writing
Assessment Plan
· It was
decided that after passing English 103, science students can
also take the Technical Writing Course taught by the English
department.
Students
Poster Presentation
· Drs.
Huq, Swinton, Chikwem and Langley reported on the poster presentations
at UMASS and the University of Florida. On the 19th of October,
the students presented at Lincoln, and on the 25th of October,
18 students presented at the University of Florida while another
3 students traveled to UMASS. The presentations went very well.
University of Florida is negotiating with Lincoln University
for cooperative arrangements in Environmental Science, exchange
of students, University of Florida at-risk student summer camp
at Lincoln University. The negotiations are moving forward at
a fast pace.
