Welcome
- The Dean welcomed members to the meeting and hoped that
with the return of faculty to the classrooms, normalcy can return
to the campus.
Minutes
of October 14 Meeting - The minutes of meeting held on October
14, 2003 was approved with the following minor corrections.
Professor Tsai said that minutes should reflect that the way
the fire alarm was installed in Wright Hall is not aesthetically
pleasing. Dr. Safford stated that professors from the University
of Pittsburgh were scheduled to come to Lincoln on November
17 - 18.
Visit
to Universities of Florida and Maryland - Dr. Langley reported
that 16 students presented posters at Florida. Two students
were offered summer positions in 2004. Dr. Duran and the Dean
of Research were scheduled to visit Lincoln University but visit
was postponed as a result of the faculty strike. Dr. Langley
further stated that students from Lincoln made a very good impression
in Florida.
Dr. Swinton
reported that 3 students presented posters at the University
of Maryland. The quality of Lincoln University posters was far
superior to those presented by other schools. He suggested that
Lincoln University could host the poster session for HBCU's
next year.
Dr. Swinton
also traveled with 3 students to Morgan State University to
attend the NASA sponsored career workshop. One student may work
for NASA cooperative program; the other two may get internships
for the summer.
Committee
on Excellence
Dr. Langley reported that he met with Dr. Venerable to discuss
the issue. A charge was yet to be provided by the VPAA. The
school committee has not met.
Committee
on New Science Building
Professor Barimani reported on the committee meeting of November
3, 2003. Physics provided a proposal about their space requirement.
Other departments were still calculating their requirements.
Questions relating to the location of Math and Computer Science
were asked. It was decided that the Committee should first calculate
the minimum space required with justification. A possible "U"
shaped building was suggested. The future of Grim and Wright
Halls was discussed. Many members preferred keeping Wright Hall.
All classrooms in the new building will be smart classrooms
and the Auditorium should seat 500 people.
Tutors:
Dr. Tung was teaching Chemistry students. No change was reported
for Biology, Physics and Mathematics.
Announcements/Discussions
1) Council for Undergraduate Research wants Lincoln University
to become an institutional member. Benefits include post-tenure
review, proposal writing and peer review registry.
2) Dr. Shabazz announced a lecture for 4:00 p.m. on November
12 on the Science of Learning Mathematics.
3) Professor Tsai asked about NSF grant. He was informed that
the School will apply. A letter of intent had already been sent.
