Welcome
Dr. Chikwem
welcomed the faculty to the meeting. He requested faculty to
attend meetings on time so that agenda items can be discussed
with input from a majority of the faculty.
Minutes
of Previous Meetings
The minutes
of meetings held on August 22 and September 16 were approved
after minor corrections. The only correction to the minutes
of September 16 is that the complaint from faculty in Wright
Hall should reflect the way the fire alarm is being installed.
Peer
Tutors
Dr. Huq
reported that tutors for Physics were yet to be hired. There
was also none for the Mathematics department. The biology department
has 1 tutor hired by the SGA; another one is yet to assume duty.
Science
Day
Drs. Langley
and Swinton reported on the success of the science day. Comments
were made by faculty on raising funds for prizes, uniformity
in collecting money for the event and providing more incentives
including plagues for winners. There were also suggestions regarding
publishing the reports in the school journal. Faculty was informed
about students going to various Universities for poster presentations
and conferences. Eighteen students were scheduled for the University
of Florida, 5 students for the University of Maryland, 8 students
for Morgan State University and 2 students for the University
of Massachusetts.
Academic
Excellence / New Science Building
Each department
was requested to nominate 1 representative for each of the committees.
The dean will appoint a representative to convene meetings of
the committees.
Advanced
Placement or College Credit Courses
In order
to help high school students in the community to earn college
credits before graduation, it was suggested that departments
should decide what introductory courses they can offer to high
school students. The courses can be taken in the high schools
or at Lincoln University.
