Call to Order at 4:10 p.m. by the Dean, Dr. John O. Chikwem.
2.
Minutes of last meeting were reviewed and approved.
3.
Dr. Langley updated members about the health of Professor Lin
who was currently at the Sunbridge Nursing Home in Elkton, Maryland,
Professor Lin was in good spirits in spite of the terminal nature
of his illness.
4. Poster
session
Dr. Langley further gave more information about the poster session
being planned for October 19, 2002 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
He pleaded with faculty to support the effort especially with
regard to volunteering to judge the posters. It was further
revealed that 25 students would be competing and several schools
including the University of Massachusetts will be represented.
While here, the visitors from UMASS will do a site visit as
well as hold discussion with faculty of the Physics department.
On the 25th of October, our students will also be making poster
presentations at the University of Florida and the University
of Massachusetts. At the University of Florida, faculty from
our school will be matched with those of the host University
to explore areas of cooperation.
5. Environmental
Science Major
Dr. David Royer, Chair of Biology Department presented program
plan for the proposed Environmental Science program. The proposed
program will have Biology and Chemistry tracks. Faculty were
asked to study the proposal for detailed discussion during the
next school meeting. Some faculty suggested replacing Physical
Chemistry II with Quantitative Analysis; removal of Calculus
II, and inclusion of some Physics courses.
6. Course
renumbering in the Mathematics Department
It was explained that no changes in the course contents was
being proposed, just renumbering to eliminate confusion. The
proposal was approved and will be taken to the Curriculum Committee.
7. WEB
CT
Dr. Huq introduced he use of Web CT for course management. He
informed members that faculty in the school were not doing enough
to promote the use of Web CT. He used the management of physics
103 to demonstrate how Web CT could be used for science based
courses. He said that he would be available to help any faculty
interested in using Web CT.
8. School
Journal
Members
were informed of the election of Dr. Bhat and Royer as co-editors
of the School Journal to be called "The Journal of the School
of Natural Sciences and Mathematics." Format and instruction
to authors will be made available by the next meeting. Other:
Dr. Bhat announced that two seminar speakers from the New York
University and the University of Virginia will be coming to
Lincoln University soon. He requested all faculty to support
the department's seminar.
