Minutes

September 21, 2004

I.                   Welcome:  The Dean welcomed members of the faculty to the meeting, thanked them for successfully registering all students into their classes.  He explained that because of the fact that about 50% of the students were classified as freshmen; new strategies must be adopted when scheduling courses for subsequent semesters.

II.                Minutes:  This was approved with minor corrections.

III.             Nancy Evans:  Presented on new tasks of Academic Support Center, previously called IMC.

IV.              LEAPS Grant:  The Dean told faculty that brochure materials had been sent to printer for layout.  Hopefully, printing should be completed by mid October to facilitate recruitment.  Faculty will work with Admissions Office to recruit sufficient students for the Science Program.  The Dean also stated that student peer tutors commenced tutoring in all science disciplines on the 19th.  He however stated that the success of our program depended on the availability of scholarships for science recruits.

V.                 Science Fair:  It was agreed that because of the poster session being arranged by LS-AMP, the school should postpone its science fair till next semester.  The end of February or early March of 2005 was suggested.  Dr. Langley announced that the Philadelphia AMP would be celebrating its 10th anniversary on the 9th of October at the Sheraton University City and judges will be needed.  He asked faculty to complete the forms and register to attend.  He also asked faculty to encourage student to present their posters.

VI.              Planning for 2005/06 School Year:  Dr. Chikwem pointed out that with the completion of the first phase of the new student housing complex, about 900 freshman should be expected in the Fall 2005.  Questions were asked about classrooms, new faculty hires and other problems that may arise with that number of students.  Dr. Chikwem explained that scheduling of classes would first take care of freshmen and sophomores before juniors and seniors.  Adjuncts will be hired as dictated by need and tutorials will be approved for small classes.

VII.           Assessment of Student Performance:  Chairs will handle this after meeting with the Dean.

VIII.        Scaling Down Majors and Minors:  A committee will be set up to handle this issue.

IX.              Representation in Faculty Committees:  Dr. Chikwem requested faculty to consider nominating their school representative to committees desiring a school representative.  So many faculty spoke for and against this issue, and no decision was taken at the meeting.

X.                 Travel Policy:  Dr. Chikwem required the faculty to adhere to the University’s travel policy.  No travel should take place without approved travel authorization.  All travel needing airfare and hotel accommodation must be done through International Tours.
