Minutes

September 17, 2001

Attendance:
Nineteen faculty were present, eight were absent and one was excused.

Opening Address:
Dr. Chikwem welcomed all faculty to the meeting.  He thanked them for a very productive school year in 2000, highlighting the national rankings of many of the programs in the School.  He expressed his hope that faculty will continue to work together for more grants, and upliftment of Lincoln University.

Introduction of New Faculty:
This was done by Dr. Bhat who introduced Dr. Hoganson.  Dr. Henry and Ms. Pathak were unavailable for introduction.

NASA Awareness Day:
Dr. Langley spoke about arrangements to observe the celebration this year, including the visit of Astronaut Guion Bluford, NASA Administrator George Reese and others on September 20, 2001.
It was agreed that faculty should encourage all their students to attend the ceremony.

Tutoring:
Dr. Chikwem announced that tutors were needed to supervise peer tutors in the Mathematics laboratory pending the hiring of a full-time staff.  Faculty were not satisfied with the handling of tutoring issues at Lincoln University.  A committee was therefore set up with Ms. Karen Taylor as chairperson to discuss the issue properly.

Honors Courses:
There was no agreement on the criteria for designating Honor’s courses.  Many faculty felt that Honor’s students were not only better prepared for college, but also were better supported at Lincoln University.  Designation of Honor’s courses was therefore not necessary.

Closing:
The meeting closed at 5:30 p.m.
