Welcome
Dr. Chikwem welcomed all faculty to the new school year. He commended faculty for the excellent job they have been doing, especially in graduating top students. He informed the faculty that in the last May commencement the School held its ground with regard to the number of summa cum laude and cum laude graduates. He stressed that in spite of our successes, there is still a lot of work to be done. However, he noted that our faculty are equal to the task.

Poster session
Dr. Langley was not available to present a report. Dr. Chikwem informed faculty that a poster session was being planned and that Dr. Langely would provide detailed plan to faculty in due course.

Internationalizing the Curriculum
A verbal report was presented by Dr. Bhat. He told faculty that Environmental issues is a central theme being adopted for this effort. $10,000 has been made available for this and a detailed report will be presented as soon as Drs. Royer, Huq and Bhat had finalized the plans.

School Journal
Dr. Chikwem presented a proposal for a school journal. It was accepted and departments were requested to nominate members to the Editorial Board. Proposal for the Honors Program: Dr. Chikwem also presented a proposal for the honors program. There was a lot of discussion on the issue. However, it was agreed that the proposal was just a guide as to our stand when the issue of the honors program came up for faculty discussion.

Other Issues
a) Hazardous Waste Handling - Dr. Chikwem informed faculty of efforts to generate and maintain up to date inventory of chemicals used in our departments, and the disposal of expired chemicals. He informed faculty to first source their chemicals from the Department of Chemistry before place an order. b) Agents of bioterrorism - Dr. Chikwem informed faculty that certain agents have been listed in this group and laboratories with such agents were required to report to federal authorities. The school is making sure that we are in compliance with this legal provision. c) School Meeting Dates: Some faculty complained about school meeting dates. The dean promised to look into this and come up with dates acceptable to a majority of the faculty.
