  1. Welcome:  Dr. Chikwem welcomed faculty back from the summer break.  He congratulated them for their excellent performance especially with regard to helping the students during the 2003/2004 school year.  He expressed optimism that the 2004/2005 school year would be more productive for all faculty and the school.
  1. Introductions:  All faculty present introduced themselves.  The only new faculty at this meeting were Dr. Helen Major who is now on tenure track in Physics and Ms. Eveyn Davis-Poe who is an adjunct faculty in Computer Science.
  1. Major Accomplishments:  Dr. Chikwem spoke about some major new accomplishments for the school.  These include:

a)      The receipt of a $2.4M, five year LEAPS grant.  This grant would enable Lincoln University to significantly increase the number of science graduates in the next five years.  He thanked the Chairs and Directors of Programs for their help in writing the proposal, and appealed to them for their help in the implementation.

b)     Summer Environmental Science Program:  Dr. Chikwem informed faculty that 14 high school students attended the Environmental Science Programs.  This represents an increase of 100% over last year.  He thanked Drs. Swinton and Royer for their efforts.

c)      Summer Internships:  Over twenty Science majors were involved in summer internships this summer.  One of the students, Ms. Ogugua Anene-Maidoh was selected to join a Science Research Team to the Antarctica in the fall semester.

d)     New Science Building:  The approval for the new science building has been obtained.  The proposal is for 125,000 square feet of usable space.  All departments would be accommodated and so, there would be no need to renovate Grim or Wright Halls for the Sciences.

  1. Goals for 2004-2005

a)      Retention and Class Management:  Dr. Chikwem asked faculty to become committed on issues pertaining to retention.  He said that many of our programs could not survive unless something was done on this issue.  Tutoring, mentoring, appropriate advising, conferences with struggling students were all suggested as strategies for the retention of students.

b)  The new area of interest in the University’s master plan include:

·                    Population Health

·                    Biotechnology

·                    Material Science

·                    Environmental Science

Meetings of chairs will be held to discuss their input in these areas, courses that need to be developed and new faculty to be hired.  Also for any of our majors to be successful, faculty should be involved in recruitment.

c)  Annual Science Fair:  Dr. Chikwem announced that the Annual Science Fair would be held on October 2nd, 2004.  Dr. Langley however informed faculty that the date will conflict with the AMP poster presentation.  As a result of this information, the Science Fair of October 2, 2004 was postponed pending new information from Dr. Langley.  Meanwhile, Chairs and Director of programs were requested to ask their students to prepare their posters.

d)  Increase in Number of Graduates to Professional and Graduate School:  Dr. Chikwem pointed out that we need to encourage students especially Pennsylvania residents about medical school scholarships.  Chairs of departments should keep accurate records of students going to graduate schools.

  1. Other Issues:

a)      Office hours:  Dr. Chikwem asked all faculty to fill out office hour schedules and paste on their doors.  Two copies of the schedule should be sent to the Dean’s Office.

b)     Drs. Nagase and Roberts announced that Mr. Reginald Heyward had passed away.  Contributions to help his family can be made through Dr. Goro Nagase.

Adjournment:  Meeting was adjourned at 1:20 p.m.
