Minutes

February 18, 2002

I. Welcome
The dean welcomed the entire faculty who attended. He apologized for canceling the January meeting due to his travel to Africa. He congratulated Dr. Susan Safford for the grant recently awarded to her. He also informed members that Dr. James DeBoy would come later to present on Assessment of Learner Outcome.

II. Minutes of November 19, 2002 meeting
This was approved unanimously.

III. Honors Convocation of March 13, 2002
The dean informed members about the changes in this year's Honors Convocation. These include the following: · Convocation to be held at 11:00 a.m. instead of 4:00 p.m. · Emphasis on high academic achievement instead of scholarship recipients. Students to be honored must have earned at least 3.0 G.P.A. · Faculty to march in procession will be required to wear academic robes. · Classes between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. will be cancelled. · Lunch will be served to honorees and their parents.

IV. Summer Internships
Faculty were requested to assist all students to successfully apply for internships. Students should also be advised to bring abstracts or write ups of their projects so that they can be used for poster presentations and student journals.

V. Global Studies Initiatives
The dean asked faculty to come up with initiatives that would support Global Studies Institute. Other schools are benefiting from travel funds, summer research, faculty development and curriculum development. The school should also become involved in programs that would benefit faculty and students. Suggestions by faculty include capacity building in scientific tests, environmental issues, epidemiology, and curriculum issues.

VI. The Core Curriculum
Proposed changes were presented by Dr. Langley. The dean requested faculty to study the changes so that the School can present an appropriate response. A meeting will be called to discuss this.

VII. Announcements
a) The dean informed faculty about a proposed visit to West Chester University for graduate and summer internships opportunities. He requested faculty to encourage all interested students to sign up for the visit. b) The dean congratulated the Math Department for improvements on their website and pleaded with other departments especially Chemistry and Biology to work on their site.

VIII. Assessment of Learner Outcome
Dr. James DeBoy presented his lecture. His speech centered on: · Why assessment is carried out (objective). · What is currently being done to identify student competencies? · How well this objective is being achieved. · Identification of Learner Outcomes · Assessment · Modification of content · Articulation of findings He promised to send copies of his presentation to faculty.

IX. Adjournment
