BACKGROUND AND HIGHLIGHTS OF ACHIEVEMENTS

Dr. John O. Chikwem has over twenty five years of experience in the field of Laboratory Medicine. He received his undergraduate and professional training at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Napier College, Edinburgh and the University of Edinburgh Medical School Pathology department.

He worked as a biomedical scientist at the University College Hospital, Ibadan before proceeding for graduate studies. He was Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Maiduguri and Consultant Microbiologist and Immunologist at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. He is an authority in the epidemiology, diagnosis and control of HIV infection. The first documented diagnosis of HIV infection in Nigeria was made in his laboratory at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. He supervised the training of laboratory personnel in laboratory diagnosis of HIV, trained nurses, doctors and other hospital workers in safety issues in handling patients, trained blood bank workers in assessing potential blood donors. He also played a major role in monitoring the spread of the infection in Nigeria.

He worked with various organizations including the World Health Organization, Aficare and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in training trainers and mapping out strategies to contain the HIV epidemic in Nigeria. He co-founded and coordinated the activities of the Borno State Advisory Committee on AIDS from 1987 to 1995. He helped the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) in Nigeria establish sentinel centers for evaluating the impact of the Expanded Program on Immunization.

He was part of several teams that investigated and controlled various infections including cholera, yellow fever, typhoid fever and schistosomiasis. He is the author of over thirty publications.
