Activities that Provide Elements for Undergraduate Research Development

Internal:
Most schools/departments have in their curriculum one or more of the following:

  • Research Methods Courses
  • Statistics Courses
  • Senior Seminar and Research Paper

External:
Summer Internships

  • NIH/NIDA
  • NAFEO
  • Institute of Medicine/National Academy of Sciences
  • National Science Foundation
  • Enviromental Protection Agency

These are competitive, nationally structured internships where students must submit the following:

  1. Statement of Purpose containing their capabilities, skills (including computing and statistical), their areas of research interest, and how they perceive the research experience enhancing their higher degree development.
  2. Have a GPA of at least 3.0.
  3. An application form showing evidence of involvement in their major - club activities; e.g., history club, physics, chemistry, education, philosophy, languages as well as leadership roles in the above or University-wide activities.

Past Internships:
For the last five years:

  • Average of 30 students per year take part in Summer Research Experience
  • Most of the students are Science Majors
  • Average of 15 students per year present posters at Lincoln University's Annual Science Fair
  • 10 - 15 students present posters at conferences outside Lincoln University
  • 2 - 3 students win first to third place prizes each year
  • 2 - 3 students co-author scientific publications with mentors in journals
