Using Email in WebCT

Sending Mail in WebCT
  1. Click on e-mail on the blue menu at the side of the screen (or from the course homepage click on Communication Tools and then E-mail.)

  2. Click on Compose Mail Message. The Compose Mail Message screen appears in a new browser window.

  3. Fill in the Send to text box by browsing the list of possible recipients. Click Browse to make the list of possible recipients appear.

  4. Select recipients by clicking on their name. To select more than one recipient, hold down the CTRL key while clicking the names.

  5. Click Done. The recipient names are now entered in the Send to text box.

  6. In the Subject text box, type your subject. This text box cannot be left blank.

  7.  In the Message text box, type your message. This text box cannot be left blank.

  8. If you do not wish to attach any message and are ready to send your message, click on the Send button at the bottom left.

  9. The e-mail message will be sent and a copy placed in your Outbox folder.
Attaching a File to an E-Mail Message
  1. Compose your e-mail message as described above, steps 1 - 7.

  2. Now you are ready to attach a file to that message. This is a two-step process:  first you BROWSE for the file (= locate it on your computer), then you ATTACH it.

  3. Underneath the e-mail message box is an empty box labeled Attachments. Click the Browse button to the right of that box to search your computer ("My Documents",  removable drive, etc.) for the file you want to send .

  4. When you locate the file, click the filename to select it and then click the Open button at the bottom right, just as you would to open a file that you want to bring to your computer screen. 

  5. You will now see the filename in the Attachments box. Underneath the box you will see the words  “There are no files attached.”

  6. Click Attach File. DON'T FORGET THIS SECOND STEP IN THE 2-STEP ATTACHMENT PROCESS! The filename of the document you want to attach now appears underneath the Attachments box  in blue.

  7. You can now remove the Attachment in case you attached the wrong file (by clicking in the small box in front  of the title and then clicking on “Remove Attachments.”)

  8. When you are sure that you have the correct file attached, you are ready to send the e-mail message and its attachment.

  9. To send the message, click on the Send button at the bottom left. The message and attachment will be sent, and a copy placed in your Outbox folder.
