Don't use exclamation points in academic writing, unless you are quoting someone who has used them.
In scholarly writing, an issue is marked as important by its meaning, not by following it with exclamation marks.
- Informal style:
On an average, 85% of the women in our residential program report being victims of abuse!
- Academic style:
On an average, 85% of the women in our residential program report being victims of abuse.
Save those exclamation points for your emails, your novels, and your poetry.
