The Honorable
Dr. Rod Paige, U.S. Secretary of Education (center) awaits
procession instructions prior to Lincolns 145th Commencement
ceremonies on May 2, 2004. Dr. Paige is flanked by Lincoln President
Ivory V. Nelson, Ph.D. (left) and Frank C. Gihan 72,
chair of the Universitys Board of Trustees. Dr. Paige delivered
the keynote address to Lincolns 165 undergraduate and 157
graduate degree recipients as well as thousands of family and
friends.

Honoring a Buffalo SoldierDr. William Henry
Waddell, IV (center with white cowboy hat), a 1931 Lincoln
graduate, was one of three honorary degree recipients at the Universitys
145th Commencement ceremonies on May 2, 2004. Dr. Waddell, one
of the nations first blacks to practice veterinary medicine,
received Lincolns Doctor of Science Honorary Degree. Making
the presentation from left are: Lincoln President Ivory V. Nelson,
Ph.D., Rev. Calvin S. Morris, Ph.D. 63, vice chairman, Lincoln
Board of Trustees; and Trustee Dr. Ernest C. Levister, Jr. 58.
Dr. Waddell served honorably as a member of the U.S. Armys
heralded Buffalo Soldiers from 1941-1946 in North
Africa. Originally established by Congress as the U.S. Armys
9th and 10th Cavalries after the Civil War, the Buffalo Soldiers
were an all-black, mounted regiment who protected work crews installing
telegraph and railroad lines across the Western Frontier.

A Lincoln
PioneerAdrienne G. Rhone, a 1976 cum laude Lincoln graduate,
is presented with is the Universitys Doctor of Humane Letters
Honorary Degree by Lincoln President Ivory V. Nelson, Ph.D. (left),
during Lincolns 145th Commencement ceremonies on May 2,
2004. Assisting the President Nelson with the presentation (right)
is Board of Trustees parliamentarian Dr. Robert L. Albright 66.
Rhone is the Manager of Government Relations for the International
Business Machines (IBM) Corporation, Governmental Programs in
Washington, D.C. Mrs. Rhone is the first woman to chair Lincolns
Board of Trustees (1999 to 2003). She is a life member of Lincolns
General Alumni Association and a past officer of the Universitys
D.C. Alumni Chapter.

The Honorable
Paul Boateng, Chief Secretary to the Treasury of Britain (left),
and Dr. Emmanuel D. Babatunde, director of Lincolns Honors
Program, walk in the opening procession for Lincolns 145th
Commencement ceremonies on May 2, 2004. Directly behind Boateng
and Dr. Babatunde are, from left: Rev. Dr. Valerie Tate-Green,
University Chaplain; and Dr. Grant D. Venerable II, vice president
for Academic Affairs. Lincoln presented Boateng with a Doctor
of Laws Honorary Degree for his life-long advocacy of human rights.
Boateng was born in Accra, Ghana. Ghanas first president,
Kwame Nkrumah, is a 1939 Lincoln graduate.
