Rules and Guidelines for using Ask-A-Librarian

Who can use Ask-A-Librarian?
Current Lincoln University faculty, students, and staff are our primary audience; however, we will field reference questions from outside patrons as time permits.

What kind of questions will be answered?
* A specific piece of information (example: a fact, a date, spelling a of name) or verifying citations.
* Suggestions on an appropriate electronic and print source to find information for a project or research paper.
* Assistance in the use of electronic resources. When appropriate, we will also forward to you examples of full-text articles germane to your research. Please note, we will encourage you to follow-up your search for similar articles in the electronic resources or proprietary databases that we suggest.

What are some examples of questions we cannot answer but may be able to provide a source?
* Questions asking for Medical or law-related advice are prohibited. * Product evaluations and appraisals questions.
* Legal questions, tax questions
* Genealogy and family history inquiries.

What about Quiz Questions?
Answering trivia questions is not the intent of Ask-A-Librarian. We'll try to help if you get really stuck but please don't send us twenty questions and expect answers. Remember that some quiz questions reverse the way the information is recorded in dictionaries and encyclopedias, making it problematic if not impossible to look up the answers quickly.

What can I do to phrase my question for a better response?
Be clear and concise. Be specific in what you are looking for. If you already have consulted sources, tell us what they are.

What if I am still having trouble?
The Library has a program called the Research Assistance Program or RAP. The program provides students with one-on-one assistance with term papers and other research at the Langston Hughes Memorial Library. The tremendous growth in both computerized and traditional paper resources has made it imperative that students have a thorough understanding of these basic search tools. RAP is designed to provide this extra assistance. Click here to find out more and sign up.
