Vision Statement
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures plays a major role in the
promotion of language studies and intercultural awareness and communication. Through a well-designed curriculum, it provides a solid foundation for a global perspective and helps students acquire strong translingual and transcultural competence to be effective citizens in today’s global society.
Mission Statement
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures is strongly committed to education with a global perspective, in keeping with the mission of the University to provide a quality education with an international focus. It will endeavor, through its programs, to meet the students’ academic, professional, and technological needs. It will provide a curriculum of excellence and pursue innovative teaching approaches. In order to develop students’ language proficiency, the department will seek opportunities for optimal immersion in the foreign language learning process by promoting study abroad, as well as the use of multimedia technology and the Internet.
Department Goals
The Department will pursue the following goals:
- Graduate an increasing number of majors in Spanish and French.
- Support other university programs by offering minors in several languages including Arabic and Japanese.
- Contribute to the University Core Curriculum and Bachelor of Arts degree.
- Engage in interdepartmental collaboration to create interdisciplinary opportunities for students in diverse fields of study.
- Promote study abroad and provide social and cultural opportunities outside the classroom.
French Major Program Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the French major, students are expected to be able to:
- Demonstrate speaking proficiency in French at the Advanced level of the ACTFL rating scale.
- Demonstrate reading proficiency in French at the Advanced level of the ACTFL rating scale.
- Demonstrate writing proficiency in French at the Advanced level of the ACTFL rating scale.
- Demonstrate knowledge of cultural differences and similarities, and specifically of some of the aspects of the culture necessary for academic and social success in the relevant countries.
- Use their proficiency in French to acquire information and knowledge about other disciplines such as World History, World Literature, Art History, and Political Science.
- Demonstrate proficiency in French by effectively participating in multilingual communities via study abroad experience.
Spanish Major Program Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the Spanish major, students are expected to be able to:
