Mission Statement
In
support of Lincoln University's mission to foster in students
an appreciation for competition and coexistence in the global
marketplace, Lincoln's Office of International Programs and
Services seeks to provide opportunities in international education
through study abroad and university exchange programs and offers
support services for international students designed to address
their special needs and to facilitate their adjustment to the
United States.
Vision
Statement
Study
abroad at Lincoln University embodies both academic performance
and an awareness and healthy respect for diversity that is facilitated
by the study abroad experience. It enhances the educational
process by engaging well- prepared students in qualitative and
stimulating learning experiences in a variety of international
settings. Study abroad allows students to experience foreign
cultures through contact with faculty, students and the general
populations of the host country, and, in societies where the
native language is not English, it provides them with a functional
and ever-expanding proficiency in the language.
Global influences have prevailed at Lincoln University since
its founding in 1854 when the founding fathers had as one of
their original purposes, the training of young missionaries
for service in Africa; the three members of the first graduating
class of 1859 went to serve in Liberia. Lincoln continues to
have an international connection and its emphasis on global
education and empowerment courses has formed a core of its philosophy
and mission for the past 15 years. In its current strategic
plan document, Lincoln reaffirms its commitment to the provision
of an education that reinforces the graduate for success in
an increasingly complex and global environment. Empowerment
courses across disciplines have been part of Lincoln's core
curriculum for about 12 years.
The Office of International Programs and Services was established
to provide assistance and information to the international campus
community. Our services include: study abroad activities, cross-cultural
counseling and advising, immigration assistance, orientation
programs, labor certification, international campus and community
activities, and social and cultural activities. Today, Lincoln's
113 international students come from Bulgaria, The Bahamas,
China, France, The United Kingdom, Ghana, Grenada, Jamaica,
Liberia, Kenya, Mexico, Namibia, Nigeria, St. Lucia, Tanzania,
Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. And, Lincoln
University regularly sends its American students to study in
Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Americas. This past
year, Lincoln sent 19 students abroad for study and work experiences.
