B. Dean's Updates: Departments were reminded of the Open House for prospective students on October 26. Grant-writing is encouraged and should be aggressively pursued. Serious consideration should be given to pursuing a Fulbright Scholar in the humanities. Several department chairs had been invited to explore the possibility.

C. Spring Schedule of Classes á Chairs are to make note of recently received memos in regard to the spring schedule of classes. á In response to tutorials, the Academic Council is working on issues related to tutorials, with regard to the number of tutorials full time faculty can offer, and all other pertinent matters.

D. Core Curriculum UpdateÐDr. Benson Prigg á There was discussion on just how bare the curriculum will be trimmed before Lincoln University is no longer a liberal arts institution, not only in the Humanities, but in other schools. á The School of Humanities has to aggressively review its core curriculum. á All courses must be examined, including the two-credit courses, as well as the cooperate, team- teaching between English and Foreign Language re: world literature courses. á Dr. Flint called attention to the need to offer students transferable credit courses. An examination of the entire scheme of the core will be given. Also, the core needs to remain focused on building core skills.

E. Nominations were made for the replacement of Dr. Prigg, outgoing member of the Ad Hoc Core-Curriculum Committee responsible for over-viewing the university core curriculum. Nominated and elected: Dr. Marilyn Button to serve with Dr. Flint

F. Pre-Registration Advising: Faculty were reminded that pre-registration advising forms are to be used to facilitate the process. Pre-advising should take place during the week prior to pre-registration.

G. The Langston Hughes Center for the Arts Proposal was distributed for feedback. Faculty were asked to read it and send feedback to the Dean.

H. The first draft of The Strategic Plan for Academic Affairs was vigorously discussed by faculty. Concerns were as follows:

1. absence of the languages in the plan and any international dimension;
2. specific needs of certain courses in the department (I.3);
3. the need to build the infrastructure for a solid technology base, which should be a number one priority;
4. a lack of relevance to workplace needs;
5. an apparent erosion of liberal arts courses;
6. the focus on business and science, toward eventually the elimination of humanities courses.
7. lack of scholarship incentives;
8. a need to explain what is meant by traditions of HBCUs (1) ;
9. expansion and enhancement of bridge programs (5);
10. the BS/BMSÐlength of program (6);
11. insufficient support of The Learning Resource Center (13);
12. lack of commitment to strengthening effectiveness in composition courses; and
13. the lack of criteria for the evaluation/assessment of career-centered programs.

I. Election of Student Representative to the Global Studies Institute Advisory Committee Nominated: Chima Operah, Massa Nuni

J. Odyssey of The Mind Proposal Dr. Mahasveta Barua introduced an Oddysey of the Mind Proposal, a prospective program (creativity club) that is international and interdisciplinary in its dimensional appeal to students, which can also bring visibility to Lincoln University. The consensus of faculty was that the program be implemented by Dr. Barua as a pilot program.

Meeting adjourned at 5: 35 PM.

Respectfully submitted by:

Dr. A. Myrna Nurse, Recorder
