Minutes

The meeting commenced at 10:20 AM with a welcome by Dr. Willis.

Department chairs introduced new faculty, which included: Dr. Mel Leaman, Dr. Maria Torres (absent due to proctoring department placement examination), Dr. Myrna Nurse, Mr. Paul Wandless, and Dr. William Garcia.

Dr. Safro Kwame was recognized for having received The Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award, and Dr. Marilyn Button was welcomed back from a two-year leave-of-absence.

Noted changes within the school were: curriculum-improvements; increased number of majors in Departments of Philosophy and Religion; a new TV/video studio to enhance the Communications Program. It was also noted that the School will pursue two grants: (1) a small grant for the Larry Neal Lecture Series, which will allow distinguished writers to be invited to campus; and (2) a grant for the Langston Hughes Writers Center.

We were reminded that visiting Native Cherokee poet and storyteller, Marijo Moore, funded by the Faculty Development Fund, will be available for class visits.

Syllabus requirements, in conjunction with the university's new student-centered focus on excellence, are:
* a syllabus is to be distributed on the first day of classes
* all syllabi are to be filed in the Dean's office by the deadline (August 29, 2001) not a stringent deadline
* papers and exams should be kept available for at least one year; the exact policy regarding the length of time these documents are to be kept is to be investigated
* record keeping of student attendance should begin on the first day of classes; students are permitted up to three absences
* even within the nebulous wording of the Bulletin, course descriptions are to be consistent with its wording; in core courses, the same content should be taught for continuity, accountability, standardization, conceptualization, with some room for flexibility.

Office hours are to be posted and adhered to. Cancelled hours should be posted and the department secretary so informed.

Mid-term and Final Examinations are to be taken seriously and so stated on the syllabus. A good idea is to show how they factor into the final grade.

Note: The policy on mid-term grade reporting and how such influences the last day for add/drop is to be investigated by Dr. Willis. Incomplete grades given for any other reasons than those that exist in the catalog are unacceptable.

Incompletes will be scrutinized. Grade changes for any reasons other than computational errors will not be supported by the dean or chairs.

Attendance at faculty meetings is expected by all, including visiting faculty.

Travel vouchers toward authorization should be completed prior to the trip.

Items #4 and #5 were deferred to the September meeting.

Nominated and elected as Humanities Representatives on the Global Studies Committee were Dr. Maazaoui and Dr. Kwame.

Motion to adjourn: 12:10 PM.

Respectfully submitted by Dr. Myrna Nurse
