Humanities and MHS Faculty Achievements: 2006 - 2007

English and Mass Communications

Dr. Marilyn Button, Professor of English and Chair of the Department of English and Mass Communications, was awarded  the Christian R. & Mary Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award in the Fall of 2006.  Dr. Button presented “Business English and the Workplace” at the University of Sana, in Yemen, in May 2007, and  “City Mission and Community Service: An Historical Model” at the Women with a Vision 4 Conference in June, 2007.

Mr. William Donohue, Lecturer in English, was honored for service in the Humanities Tutoring Program by The School of Humanities, and  he presented a paper at the 2007 MAWCA (Mid-Atlantic Writing Center Association) Meeting in Spring, 2007, entitled “Beer and Popcorn:  Ben Franklin’s Junto and Writing Center Pedagogy.” 

Ms. Billie Travalini, Instructor of English, was chosen by the Department of Children, Youth & Their Families to design and teach creative writing lessons at detention centers throughout Delaware. Her memoir, Bloodsisters, won first place, for nonfiction with the Delaware Press Association.  Ms. Travalini is the faculty advisor and editor of SIMBAA, a literary magazine published by The Department of English and Mass Communications.  

Dr. Jeff Hoogeveen, Associate Professor of English, co-wrote The Thomson Handbook, with David Blakesley of Perdue University.  For his scholarship – Dr. Hoogeveen was awarded the Hildrus S. Poindexter Research Award for 2007 by Lincoln University

Dr. Nabanita Ghosh,  Instructor in English, presented the movie “Water” at the conference entitled “Women: Between Tradition and Modernity: An International Film Series”.  After the movie, Dr. Ghosh conducted a discussion series.

Foreign Languages and Literatures

Dr. Abbes Maazaoui, Associate Professor of French and Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, was Panel Chair at the Northeast Modern Language Association (NEMLA) Annual Meeting in Baltimore.  He was also Coordinator for a , teleconference on “Online Language Learning and Instruction” that was organized in cooperation with McGraw Hill.  In March, 2007, Dr. Maazaoui received an award for coordination of the Humanities Tutoring Program at Lincoln University. He has been awarded a sabbatical leave for Spring 2008.  

Dr. Maria I. Charle Poza,  Assistant Professor of Spanish, presented “Exit Strategy: Pedagogical Applications for Second Language Writing” at the Northeast Modern Language Association in March, 2007. Dr. Poza also presented “Capitalizing on Minority Student Realities in the Spanish Classroom” at the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages in April, 2007.

Philosophy and Religion

Dr. Gwinyai Muzorewa, Professor of Religion and the Chair of Philosophy and Religion, was awarded the Scholarly Work Award by Lincoln University’s Board of Trustees in February, 2007. Dr. Muzorewa’s most recent publications are “African Liberation Theology” in The Journal of Theology  (1990); An African Theology of Mission, Edwin Mellon Press (1991); Mwari: The Great Being God: God is God, University Press of America (2001);  and Know Thyself: Ideologies of Black Liberation (University Press of American, 2005),

Visual and Performing Arts

Prof. Charles Pettaway,  Associate Professor of Music and Chair of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, served as Artist in Residence at Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, for The Zelpha Wells Piano Competition in March, 2007; served as judge and advisor for the Tourgee Debose National Piano Competition held at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in April, 2007; served as a lecturer in the “Speakers Program” sponsored by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council; and has given five piano recitals. 

Dr. Alvin Amos,  Professor of Music, served as Moderator-Scholar for a jazz lecture series entitled “Looking at Jazz” funded by the National Endorsement for the Humanities and The Pennsylvania Humanities Council, in cooperation with The Langston Hughes Memorial Library.  Dr. Amos also attended the NASPAAM Biennial Conference, held at Jackson State University in Spring 2007, and served as a NASPAAM Board Member .

Dr. William B. Garcia, Professor of Music and Conductor of the Lincoln University Choir, presented the Choir in stellar performances throughout the academic year, ending with a Spring Tour that included performances in Victor, N.Y., Rochester, N.Y. and Stanford, CT.

Mr. Henry Wade Johnson, Visiting Instructor and Band Director, recorded and released a jazz CD entitled “H. Wade Johnston LIVE at Sahang; Co-Designed the Lincoln University “ORANGE CRUSH” Marching Band Uniforms; and was selected to serve as one of the Jazz Clinicians and conductors for the Junior All-State Jazz Band and the DMENG (Delaware Music Educators National Conference).

Ms. Rita McKinley Pride, Visiting Lecturer in Music, was recognized by the Lincoln University Board of Trustees for Peer-Reviewed Scholarly/Juried Artistic Works and Performances – “Live in Finland,” Opera Ebony (Live Performance CD Release); and served as Adjudicator for The National Association of Business and Professional  Women’s Regional Vocal Contest (formerly the Leontyne Price Vocal Arts Competition

Eva Young, Adjunct Instructor and Accompanist for The Lincoln University Concert Choir, performed at Arch Street Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia and at Temple University.  She also performed with the Metropolitan Opera at Watchung Arts Center.  Ms. Young also toured with the Lincoln University Choir.

Mr. Jeff Chapp, Associate Professor of Art had three exhibitions:  
An Extravagance of Salt & Pepper Containers, Shakers, Concepts”  at Baltimore Clayworks in Baltimore, Maryland.                      
Brothers in Arts: Steven Chapp-Prints and Other Media & Jeffrey Chapp-Ceramics” at Pickens County Museum of Art & History in Pickens, South Carolina
“From the Earth” at the University of Kentucky Museum of Art in Lexington, Kentucky
He was also recognized by the Lincoln University Board of Trustees for peer-reviewed juried artistic works.

Master of Human Services
Dr. Linda Stine, Professor of Human Services, published one  article: "Just What is “Basic”? The Best of Both Worlds: Teaching Basic Writing in Class and Online" in The Journal of Basic Writing and Classroom Resources for Instructors Using Writing First, published by Bedford/St. Martin's Press.  In collaboration with Nicole Pepinster Greene and Patricia J. McAlexander, Dr. Stine published a chapter on Lincoln University in Basic Writing in America:  The History of Nine College Programs, published by Hampton Press (Spring, 2007).  She was also the discussion leader for McGraw-Hill’s “Teaching Basic Writing: In Labs? Online? In Between?” (April, 2007).
