Lincoln WOMEN take another step up THE Hill

NORTH EAST, MD. – Rayshonna “Rabbit” Hill (Brooklyn, N.Y./Banneker) has endured the struggles of a typical freshman. Her season has, at times, resembled the stock market: Up one game and down the next. She has suffered through scoreless outings, poor shooting performances and benchings. Yet, the talented Hill has not lost confidence in her ability to produce.

Lately, Hill has been performing like the player that opened the season in November with an impressive 26-point outing against Lehman College. As the Lincoln University women’s basketball team enters its final week of the season, the energetic freshman is finishing with a flourish.

Hill scored 11 points to help Lincoln defeat Wilmington College, 57-48 in a nonleague women’s basketball game at Cecil County Community College Monday night.

Senior Jada Savoy (Philadelphia, PA./Bodine) was the Lady Lions high scorer with 16 points. Senior Altoria Spann (Philadelphia, PA./William Penn) added nine points while senior Simone Howell (Bryn Mawr, PA./Radnor) and freshman Mary Rotimi (Philadelphia, PA./Frankford) chipped in with eight points each for Lincoln, which won its second consecutive game.

Hill, who also played a major role in Lincoln’s sweet come-from-behind, 67-62 road victory over Keystone College last Saturday, had six steals and three assists against Wilmington. Her fleet feet and fast fingers got the Lady Lions moving early as Lincoln zoomed to 9-0 lead less than three minutes into the game.

Blessed with hops and handle, Hill resembles a kangaroo and a washing machine on the spin cycle because of how active she is during games. Hill is the Lady Lions third leading scorer at 8.5 points per game, but most of her scoring numbers were compiled in the beginning of the season.

As for the game, Lincoln had one ugly stretch, but it quickly overcame a 27-26 second-half deficit. Lincoln, which led 26-22 at intermission, did not score its first points of the second half until Howell deposited a layup with 14 minutes, 47 seconds remaining. The Lady Lions never trailed again. Howell’s basket kick started a 15-3 burst that gave Lincoln control of the game along with a 41-30 advantage.

Things got slightly scary for the Lady Lions down the stretch as some shaky ball handling helped Wilmington trim a 53-40 deficit to 53-48 with 43 seconds remaining. Thanks to free throws down the stretch by Ruthy Rotimi (Philadelphia/Frankford) and Howell, the Lady Lions were able to build on their victory against Keystone.

Against Keystone, the Lady Lions displayed resiliency and heart in overcoming a 34-25 halftime deficit. Howell scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Lincoln. Hill turned in another solid all-around performance by scoring 13 points, dishing out five assists and making four steals. Sophia Johnson (Paulsboro, N.J./Paulsboro) had nine points and five rebounds. Savoy and Mary Rotimi scored eight points each for Lincoln, who outscored Keystone, 42-28 in the second half. Ruthy Rotimi grabbed eight rebounds and Ciera Williams (Crisfield, MD./Crisfield) collected three steals. Spann grabbed 13 of Lincoln’s season-high 68 rebounds.

The Lady Lions will try to make it three in a row when they host Columbia Union College in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday at Cecil County Community College.
