Mission
Statement
Department: Health, Physical
Education & Recreation (HPER)
Date: December 2007
Major
Program
The overarching goal
of the HPER Department is to prepare and graduate students for graduate
school and the marketplace for purposes of enhancing health wellness
statuses of the students/clients who they serve. Given the ever-widening
health disparities between white Americans and populations of color,
this goal becomes more relevant each subsequent year. Narrowing
that gap can be achieved with well-prepared students embarking on
a career in the health sciences.
Service
Program
The purpose of HPR 101:
Wellness course is to empower students as health consumers so that
they become active agents in their pursuit of health wellness. At
the individual level, students must recognize and embrace their
capability in effecting behavioral change; it is toward this aim
that HPR 101 is focused.
The purpose of HPR 103:
Fitness for Life is to identify those first year students whose
Body Mass Indices place them at risk for hypokinetic disease. This
course is designed to lower that risk via knowledge, attitude and
behavior changes that specifically target physical activities and
nutrition.
