2003. Baseball Team Completes 2003 Fall Season
Players
nominated for pre-season selections
Despite injuries
and faced with adversity, the Lincoln University Lions Baseball Team, an NCAA
Division III Intercollegiate baseball team, completed their extensive fall season.
Some of the games vs. schools on the original schedule were cancelled due to weather
or injuries on the other team. However, other games were added allowing for a
four game season.
The Lions also played in the 1st Annual
Orange & Blue Classic, a split-squad exhibition best 2 of 3 game series.The Orange
team defeated the Blue team in 2 games. This tournament provided an opportunity
for team members to play each other and to develop team skills.
Tryouts
were held on August 27-29 and September 2. Practice sessions continued 4 to 5
days per week through late October. The players are currently undergoing an intense
offseason self-supervised weight training and conditioning program. Although the
Lions finished 0-4 in the fall, Paul K. Johnson, Mens Head Baseball Coach, remains
optimistic with this 2003-04 team. "Our scores and competitiveness improved from
game to game. We lost with the scores of 8-3, 5-2, 2-0, and 10-9. Despite injuries
and an incomplete team, our team was very competitive vs. some challenging teams,"
said Coach Johnson. The most important game was the last game because although
the Lions lost, it was the first time they scored more than 3 runs in a long time.
Based on the performance of individual players in Spring 2003
and Fall 2003, Coach Johnson submitted pre-season information to Collegiate Baseball,
a national college baseball newspaper. Joshua DeBeary(Philadelphia-PA) and Matthew
Sample(Lincoln University-PA) were nominated as Pre-Season All-American Picks.
DeBeary had a .333 BA and .440 OBA while Sample had a .421 BA and .500 OBA in
Spring 2003. The following were nominated as Top Newcomers: Arlin Alvarez, Marcus
Bradford, Timothy Bryant, Anthony Cianferano, Tom Havers, Tim O'Rear, and Raylan
Rodriguez.
