2002-2003
SEASON OUTLOOK
Lincoln
University Lions
Mens Varsity Baseball Team
Rebuilding is the key phrase when it comes to the Lincoln University Lions baseball
team. Spearheading that effort is 1st year Head Coach Paul K. Johnson, who has
coached on the collegiate and youth baseball levels for over 13 years. He has
begun laying the foundations of teaching baseball fundamentals that include aggressive
offense, solid defense, and effective pitching. Coach Johnson is also working
on developing an expanded game schedule, implementing a fall season, and is intensely
recruiting for future seasons. Although there is concern due to lack of experience
and roster depth, Coach Johnson has seen improvement and sees potential.
The
Lions return several seniors who are expected to make up a crucial core of the
current season. Rob Pringle is expected to provide solid defense at 3B and as
a backup at the 1B & C positions. Antonio Grant is a left-handed power hitting
threat in the middle of the lineup and will be the primary catcher. Richard Williams
provides blazing speed on the basepaths and the outfield. Clifton Jefferson anticipates
overcoming a season ending injury in 2002 to make contributions as an outfielder
with increasing arm strength. Tertius Ammah shows continous improvement as an
outfielder. Terron Brown is a newcomer and training to be an effective pitcher.
Other returning Lions will also make key contributions. Ricky
Hardy (Junior) is expected to use his speed offensively and defensively. Charles
Fleming III (Junior) has the potential to be a prototypical defensive outfielder.
Corey Holbrook, a sophomore, is anxious to build upon his freshman playing experience
at 2B. Ryan Sellers, senior, seeks to provide solid defense at 3B. Brian Wilson,
a sophomore, is developing as a pitcher and utility infielder.
There
are several freshmen seeking to make important contributions. Jason Lewis has
demonstrated his potential to handle the bat. Joshua DeBeary will hold down the
position at SS and also provide a boost at the top of the lineup. Matt Sample
has been rewarded with the status of opening day pitcher and will also provide
defense at 1B. Dawan Alford shows great athletic ability that has potential to
be used in baseball.
Other rostered players include Nate Brooks,
William Harris, Kevin Garner, Ismail Numan, and Mark Theodore.
