Coach
Doug Thompson joined the Lions staff in 2004 as an
assistant coach with over 25 years of experience in baseball as a player, manager
and coach. He primarily supports Coach Johnson with the hitting instruction and
works with the outfielders. Throughout his career Thompson has either played or
coached with teams that consistently made the postseason. He played and coached
for a variety of amateur and semi-pro teams since 1983 in California, New Hampshire,
Japan, and Virginia. Thompson continues to play for several amateur and semi-pro
teams including Vick Willis and the Men's Senior Baseball League in Delaware.
He played baseball at William Penn High School in Delaware and Norfolk State University.
Thompson is involved in continuing education. He is often sought out for his expertise
in baseball, labor, and military issues.
Mark
Wilhelm
Assistant Coach
Mark Wilhelm
brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience since he joined the Lions staff
in 2004 as an assistant coach. His main duties include developing the Lions pitching
staff and assisting Coach Johnson with the hitting instruction and the infielders.
Wilhelm has played semi-pro baseball in Delaware since 1993 amassing a lifetime
batting average of .313 before the 2004 season. During part of this time he has
spent at least 6 years in an over-30 league in Wilmington including 2 years as
a manager and 2 years as a coach. Wilhelm played baseball at Delaware Technical
and Community College in '91 and '92. He batted .367 with 5 HR in '91 (All Region
Honorable Mention) and .414 with 7 HR in 1992 (2nd Team All-Region for RF). Wilhelm
returned to Del Tech as an assistant coach in 1993 (#5 in nation in hitting) and
1994. He has also coached for 3 years at Delcastle HS in Newport-DE and Freshman
Baseball at St. Marks HS for 2 years in Wilmington. Wilhelm lives in Hockessin-DE
with his wife Marcie and his two sons, Luke and Lex.
