Procedure to Donate Stock

1. Donor writes a “Letter of Authorization” to their stock broker authorizing transfer of stock to Lincoln University. The letter must state:

a. The number of shares to be transferred, rather than the dollar value of the stock.
b. The symbol and name of the stock.
c. Their account number and stock brokerage firm
d. Lincoln University’s stock brokerage account # 52859973, broker # 0103
e. A copy or other notification should be given to the Lincoln University to the Development Office to expedite receipt and acknowledgement to the donor whenever possible.

2. Stock can be transferred in one of four ways:

a. Wire process (preferred method) – electronic authorization to transfer certificates can be given to Lincoln University’s stock broker (broker # 0103) using the DTC procedure (i.e., broker to broker) that the donor should request in his/her “Letter of Authorization”.
b. Wire process – electronic authorization to transfer certificates can be given to Lincoln University’s stock broker (broker # 0103) using the DWAC procedure (i.e., transfer agent to broker) that the donor should request in his/her “Letter of Authorization” and contact the stock broker as directed below to arrange.
c. Physical transfer – certificates can be mailed to Lincoln University to the Fiscal Vice President's Office.
d. Physical transfer – certificates can be mailed to Lincoln University’s stock broker. This may require special handling for restricted stock. The donor to contact the broker as shown below.

3. Gifts of securities will be recorded at the market value (using the average of opening and closing prices when available) or appraised value at the date of the gift. This value will be used to acknowledge the donation.

4. Gifts of securities shall normally be sold at the earliest convenient date through Lincoln University’s stock broker if deemed appropriate for sale.

5. All market or appraised values assigned to gifts of securities must be properly supported in accordance with Internal Revenue Service regulations.
