Mission Statement
English Education Program

The English Education curriculum is designed to prepare students as professional educators certified to teach English and Language Arts in secondary schools in Pennsylvania. The curriculum includes studies that embrace both the humanities and the social sciences. The English and Mass Communications Department works closely with the Education Department as students are advised by both departments. A goal of the program is to provide students with a deep understanding and appreciation of American and World literatures, and an understanding of language and its many variations as well as the theory and practice in the teaching of literature, composition, and grammar.

The program encourages a love of learning through studies in the Humanities, and promotes reading and research in all areas of English and English Education. Through studies in foreign languages and other areas in the social sciences, students are prepared to teach in a diverse community.

The English and Mass Communications Department works closely with majors, monitoring their progress in completing required courses and maintaining an appropriate GPA.
