English 100 and 101

A Memo for English 100 and 101 Students

Subject: Portfolio Exemption from English 101 and 102

The deadline for portfolios is Friday before Thanksgiving, November 16, 2007.

You have been placed into English 100 and 101 based on your ACT or SAT scores. If you and your professor feel that you have been “misplaced” and should be in a higher section of Composition, then your professor will have to write a letter of recommendation to me. Additionally, your mid-term grade will have to be a B+ or better. Finally, you and your professor should put together a portfolio of your writing for me and for the Writing Assessment and Curriculum Committee. After making its decision, the Committee will make recommendations to me, and I will make recommendations to the Chair of the Department, who will notify your professor and you, via memo. The date that your portfolio must be received (in my office) is Tuesday, two days before Thanksgiving. Your portfolio must have the letter from your professor. This letter need not be lengthy. For your writing, we will need the following items:

Moving from 100 to 102

A minimum of two five-paragraph essays, and the essays should include an early draft and a final, typed draft, which (in 12 point font and double-spaced) is at least two complete pages. The essays should be in the Exemplification and Process/How To patterns. For a third essay, include a description pattern. Please also include writing from class that will help the Committee make its decision; however, you do not need to include material from your workbook. Do not use outside sources—use your own knowledge.

Moving from 101 to 103

A minimum of two five-paragraph essays, and the essays should include an early draft and a final, typed draft, which (in 12 point font and double-spaced) is at least two complete pages. The essays should be in the Compare/Contrast and Classification or Cause and Effect patterns. You will also need a timed, blue-book essay (graded by your professor) in the Exemplification or whichever one you did not do--Classification or Compare/Contrast pattern. This blue book essay will have to be a B- or better to satisfy the requirements of the Program’s 102 Assessment. Please also include writing from class that will help the Committee make its decision; however, you do not need to include material from your workbook. Do not use outside sources—use your own knowledge.

My office will archive your portfolio—you will not receive it back. Your professor will know about your portfolio’s outcome before your final exam. You will receive a letter from me concerning the outcome of your portfolio. If you are exempted from the next Composition course in the sequence, a copy will be sent to the Registrar. Do not pre-register for an exempted course—pre-register for the normal course, and the Department will help you find a section.
