The Composition Program

A Memo for Composition Faculty

To: All Composition Faculty

From: Dr. Hoogeveen

Date: July 31, 2007

Subject: Portfolios for English 100 and 101

Portfolios containing stellar and exemplary work from 100 and 101 students who think (with your concurrence) that they have been misplaced are due by Tuesday, two days before Thanksgiving, by the close of departmental business. Normally, only students with mid-term grades (and expected final grades) above a B (i.e., B+ or better) are considered.

The deadline for portfolios is Friday before Thanksgiving, November 21, 2008.

Please consider the following for each portfolio:

At least two blue book essays, both of which deal with the more complex rhetorical modes from the class the student wants to jump (see the Composition Program Web pages on our Home page for further information on this). For students wishing to jump 102, a B- or better (according to the Department grading standards) blue book, written under supervised conditions, is required.

At least two fully developed (i.e., running to three pages) typed essays (12 point font, double-spaced, with standard margins, and no space between paragraphs) which are accompanied by at least one prior, typed draft that shows evidence of revision abilities.

Write a brief, separate cover letter for each portfolio (You do not need to tell the Committee that this is an excellent student: only refer excellent students to the Committee.)

Any additional writing is welcome. You do not have to include copies of workbook exercises. Writing is the main component of evaluation.

Students rarely if ever jump from 100 to 103.
