MISSION STATEMENT

The Center of Excellence in the Department of Education at Lincoln University has as its primary goal the preparation of outstanding professional educators to teach in various educational settings, (preschool through secondary) in a variety of content areas. The Teacher Preparation Program offered by the Education Department at Lincoln University is approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and leads to certification for students completing student teaching and passing Praxis I and II.

The curriculum has been designed to offer a sound theoretical grounding in pedagogy and provides opportunities for teacher candidates to implement teaching and learning theories and practices in supervised experiences. The Department of Education provides the following majors: Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, Secondary Education in Biology, English, Math, Foreign Languages, Social Studies, (through the History, Sociology and other Social Science Departments) and Health and Physical Education and Music which leads to certification from K – 12th grades. The Department of Education also provides certification in Reading Specialist and other selected programs through the Graduate Center in Philadelphia.  Additionally, a post-baccalaureate teacher intern program is available to those planning for a change in career or for those who did not complete student teaching as an undergraduate.

All Education majors are required to become active members of the Education Club.
Education majors with a 3.3 or above (12 or more hours in Education) are eligible for membership in Kappa Delta Pi, the Education Department’s Honor Society.

The Education Department provides instruction and support to those incoming students with deficiencies in reading and oral communication. Approximately
65% – 70% of our students are placed into one of the developmental reading course while 80% or more are placed into the Oral Communication component, thus, providing these service courses to help our students work towards successfully completing their undergraduate degree.

                                            VISION STATEMENT

The vision of the Education Department is to train and graduate pre-service teachers who are prepared to teach in their chosen field and to continue their learning while attending a graduate education program.  It is the vision of the Education Department that our graduates will serve as models to minority students in both the urban and suburban settings in their classroom leadership roles.
