LINCOLN
UNIVERSITY RECEIVES $2.4 MILLION FROM THE NATIONAL SCIENCE
FOUNDATION (NSF) TO IMPROVE SCIENCE PROGRAMS
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has
awarded Lincoln University $2.4 million to increase the number
of students graduating in Science, Mathematics, Engineering
and Technology Programs. Starting from September 2004, Lincoln
University will receive $479,490 each year for the next five
years to finance Lincoln’s Excellent Academic Program in
Science (LEAPS).
The main goal of this program is to significantly increase the
pool of minority students receiving degrees in the sciences
and mathematics.
Specific
Objectives include the following:
1. Recruitment
of 48 students each year from the pool of aspiring but
under-prepared freshmen as science and mathematics majors.
2. Organize a well-structured bridge program for 48 students
each year in gate-keeping and bottleneck courses.
3. Institute and implement advising, mentoring and
counseling services for recruited students.
4. Provide tutoring services in science and mathematics
subjects to recruits.
5. Prepare recruits in the program for research internships,
graduate and professional schools.
6. Provide scholarships for deserving students to enable
them attend college.
7. Organize college credit summer courses for 60 high school
students in Philadelphia in gate-keeping and bottleneck
courses.
