University Overview
Lincoln University, the
oldest Historically Black College in the nation
founded in 1854, is a premier Historically Black
University that combines the best elements of
a liberal arts and science based undergraduate
core curriculum and selected graduate programs
to meet the needs of those living in a highly
technological and global society.
During the past three years Lincoln
University has achieved the following national
distinctions:
- Lincoln University
is ranked 2nd in the nation in graduating
African Americans with baccalaureate degrees
in the physical sciences.
- Lincoln is one of 20 universities nationwide
where 40% or more of its physics graduates
are women.
- Graduated 7% of African American physics
majors in the U.S. in 1999 (11/160).
- Two Lincoln University
graduates, Langston Hughes and Thurgood Marshall
honored with commemorative
US Postal Stamps (2002).
These national distinctions are continuations
of the Lincoln University tradition of educating
an impressive list of African Americans who have
distinguished themselves as doctors, lawyers,
educators, businesspersons, theologians and heads
of states.
Fifty-five of the 315 graduating seniors in
May 2000 were admitted to graduate schools. Between
1989 and 1998, 16 Lincoln University chemistry
majors earned Ph.D. degrees in chemistry and
related fields.
Cluster Background
The Business and Industry Cluster concept was
developed at the 1968 National College Conference.
During the conference, participants identified
two major needs of historically black academic
institutions: (1) assistance for colleges and
universities to prepare graduates for new opportunities,
and (2) financial assistance for deserving black
students to enable them to complete the study
required to pursue these opportunities.
Leaders from business, industry, government,
and academia decided that the most effective
way to accomplish these goals would be to form “clusters” of
businesses and industries working together with
schools of their choice. Benefits to the schools
and industries
would be maximized by placing emphasis on the
specific interests of the firm’s participants
in the Cluster.
Cluster Goals
- Increasing corporate involvement in University
programs and initiatives (e.g. pre-college
programs in schools).
- Providing summer internships, research and
other professional development opportunities
for Lincoln University students and faculty.
- Increasing the number of Lincoln University
graduates who are placed in professional positions
within the Cluster companies.
- Helping to position the University for increased
equipment and financial support.
