WHEREAS, Mr. Xavier D. Davis, a Lincoln University junior and Biology major (3.460 Cumulative GPA) from Richmond, Virginia, has been selected as a 2008 Gates Millennium Scholar (GMS); and

 WHEREAS, The Gates Millennium Scholars program was initially funded by a $1 billion grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.  The goals of the scholars program are to promote academic excellence and to provide an opportunity for outstanding minority students with significant financial need to reach their highest potential.  Established in 1999, its goal is increasing the number of high-achieving African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Hispanic American and Asian Pacific Islander American students who have significant financial need, and helping them to enroll in a complete undergraduate and graduate degree programs; and

 WHEREAS, The scholarship can be renewed each year throughout the Scholars’ undergraduate component of their degree and funds will support enrollment to graduate school for Scholars who choose one of the seven disciplines: computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science; and

 WHEREAS, Mr. Davis received over five additional scholarships including the CJW Medical Center Scholarship for Volunteering, the University Scholarship from Lincoln University, and the Community Foundation Scholarship for Outstanding Citizenship in Virginia; now therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the Lincoln University Board of Trustees recognizes the outstanding efforts and accomplishments of Mr. Xavier D. Davis, whose achievements continue to promote and advance the Lincoln University legacy of excellence.
