SUBJECT: 2008 SUMMER TRANSPORTATION INSTITUTE (STI)

DATE: March 17, 2008

Lincoln University will host the 2008 Summer Transportation Institute for secondary school students from July 7 to July 25, 2008. The purpose of the Institute is to create awareness and stimulate interest in secondary school students to take full advantage of the career opportunities that exist in the transportation industry. The STI is sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and is open to students attending public and private secondary schools across the state. The Institute is an extremely intense and structured learning opportunity for youth in the secondary school systems in Pennsylvania and nearby states.

The curriculum will expose students to new frontiers and adventures such as highway design, transportation of people and cargo, inter-modal transport systems, laws, regulations, safety, security, and career opportunities. In addition, students will participate in computer training, field trips and projects.

Approximately sixteen (16) rising seventh and eighth grade students will receive full scholarships to participate in the three-week summer program. Scholarships will include the following:

The attached application form is being sent to public and private secondary schools across the state. Guidance counselors should identify two to eight students for the Summer Transportation and assist them with completing the forms in the enclosed application package.

Notification of scholarship awards will be made by the Summer Transportation Institute to each of the selected students. The following criteria will be used in the selection of scholarship recipients:

Students must:

  • Be between the ages of 12 to 14 prior to the start of the program.
  • Be in the 7th ,8th or 9th grade for the 2008-2009 school year.
  • Have completed or be qualified to enroll in Pre-Algebra for the 2008-2009 school year.
  1. Have a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale (minimum)
  2. Have an interest in Engineering, Science, Transportation or Technology related career.
  3. Have at least two letters of recommendation.
  4. Provide standardized test score(s).
  5. Provide an essay one-page. (Why student wants to participate in the STI and how it can assist in meeting in individual career goals.)
  6. Provide transcript. Very essential.

The selection team will also consider the geographical location of applicants to ensure representation from all regions. Applicants may be interviewed before selection is made. Parents are advised to call the STI Director to set up an appointment for an interview (including phone interview).

Please consult with your science, mathematics and technology education teachers for the names of potential students who may qualify for the Institute.
