Submits New Proposal
Center on
Aging in conjunction with EqualityBridge.com
a start up technology company, submits grant to The Small Business
Innovative Research Program to impact outreach, health education
and early detection using the Internet and CD ROM technology
This
major goal of this project is to empower African American men with
information to address the prevention, early detection and treatment
of Prostate Cancer using Internet and CD ROM technology. This project
is a continuation of an outreach effort, which contacted over 3000
men and/or family members. It addresses the projects two findings:
- African American
men would private setting for obtaining information on Prostate
cancer, and
- Difficulty
recruiting and scheduling training sessions using volunteer trainers.
This
project will use and test new technology for this outreach empowerment
concept. The project will measure the number of users and the number
of people who are trained to deliver this training, and the benefits
for users and the effectiveness of the training.
These
technologies will not replace techniques presently being used. They
will offer a new approach to supplement existing efforts and evaluate
these approaches. The evaluation should provide a better understanding
of the appropriateness of these technologies in outreach and empowerment
programs.
It
is envisioned that once the CD ROM and On-line programs are demonstrated
effective, additional programs will be developed that address negative
health behaviors in the African American Community.
