1. Open Letter dated August 27, 2007 re Campus Capital Projects and Initiatives Update (orange) and
2. Ware Center and University Hall Purchasing Procedure for Furniture, Fixtures and Equipment (FFE) (blue)

He also reported that a new marquee sign is planned, which will contain a time capsule, and that bidding on the cultural center will take place in about 2 weeks.

ACTION ITEMS

1. Minutes from the May 1, 2007 faculty meeting were approved.

2. Dr. James DeBoy presented recommendations from the Student Assessment Task Force.  The proposal has been on the web page.  The new director of the learning center (Dr. York Williams) will collect samples of best practices.  It was moved and seconded to adopt the plan. Dr. Button Button proposed a friendly amendment: “highlight changes” instead of “list changes”.  The friendly amendment was accepted by a faculty vote and the motion passed.

3. Dr. Lennell Dade offered the following names from the Nominating Committee for faculty committees for 2007-08:

  • Reginald Myrick to replace Susan Safford (who is on sabbatical) on the Nominating Committee
  • Susan Pevar to continue as Faculty Secretary.

The motion passed.

DISCUSSION ITEMS

1.  Role of the Faculty Athletic Representative …..…… Dr. Terrance Johnson
NCAA requires faculty to be involved in athletics.  In order to comply with NCAA, the FAR (Faculty Athletics Representative) now reports directly to Dr. Bynum.  Dr. Johnson is developing a form to sign off when a student needs to be excused from class.  There will be a FAR conference in Baltimore in November.  As FAR, Dr. Johnson will seek faculty input; he needs help and support from faculty.  Faculty committee should work together with him.  FAR must be independent of Student Affairs, etc.

Discussion included the comment that the FAR should be under Academic Affairs, not Student Affairs, as well as questions about why the faculty did not choose the FAR and why the faculty wasn’t informed sooner about the NCAA requirement, to provide input.

Dr. Nelson compared the FAR to an Inspector General, independent of both faculty and administration.

2. Middle States ……… Drs. Linda Stine and Patricia Joseph
Dr. Joseph thanked department chairpersons for the 100% submission of their follow-up reports from the departmental assessment workshops that took place on the second day of the Faculty Retreat. Academic Affairs has a link to the Middle States Blog, which has a  link to the Self Study.  Feedback is needed.  Committee chairs and co-chairs will need to meet with Dr. Thompson when she visits for Middle States.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. Dr. Safro Kwame announced the upcoming Constitution Day Program on Sept. 17, 4-6 PM – Judge Thomas Martin to be the guest speaker.

2. Susan Pevar asked for volunteers to help plan programs in fall 2008, connected with the Abraham Lincoln exhibit.

3. Susan Pevar announced a Special Collections newsletter blog, to be linked to the website, and some current microfilming and digitization projects that will soon be available on the website.

Respectfully submitted,
Susan Gunn Pevar
Faculty Secretary
